Sunderland v Portsmouth postponement latest: ‘Grim’ weather update

Sunderland versus Portsmouth looks unlikely to be postponed after snow fell across the UK on Saturday night.

BBC Radio Solent journalist Andrew Moon is on Wearside on Sunday morning (5 January) and shared an image from outside of the Stadium of Light saying while it’s “very wet” in the North East, all the snow has “long gone”.

However, that doesn’t detract from the fact that Pompey fans will be on their way up from the south coast through areas that are still buried under snow.

According to iNews journalist Daniel Story, the A1 is closed.

“A1 closed, parts of Yorkshire and Durham in whiteout,” he said on X.

“[I] am attempting to get up to Sunderland for the game today, but I don’t envy any Portsmouth supporters trying to do the same. It’s grim out there.”

Will Sunderland v Portsmouth be postponed?

You can bet that the Portsmouth players and staff, as well as all the EFL match officials, will have stayed in Sunderland in a hotel overnight so there’s unlikely to be any threat of them not making the game.

And while the weather doesn’t look nice on Wearside, it doesn’t look as though it’s posing any kind of risk to any public safety.

The only problem is going for the Portsmouth fans who are on their way up to Sunderland this Sunday.

As of the time of writing, Google Maps says it’s a five-hour and 50-minute drive, meaning most Pompey fans will already be well on their way.

Those who have left it late might be cutting it fine with the Met Office still having an amber alert for snow across large parts of the Midlands, Yorkshire and North-East.

If you are on your way to the game, take it slowly and listen out for updates on the radio.
