Portsmouth injury v Millwall: Major Atkinson and Shaughnessy updates emerge

John Mousinho has handed a positive update on Rob Atkinson and Conor Shaughnessy as Portsmouth face Millwall.

The Den will host Pompey in the Championship on Saturday (5 April) as the visitors look to cement their place outside the relation zone.

Mousinho team are hoping to survive relegation at Fratton Park and must be at their best in the final stretch of the season.

The Hampshire outfit have struggled with several injuries in defence this season, but the English manager could potentially have some of his centre-backs return from injury soon.

Mousinho hopes to have the Englishman and Irish centre-back back available soon.

Speaking on Pompey’s official YouTube channel, the 38-year-old head coach said: “We haven’t had any long-term boys back yet. We’ve still got the likes of Atkinson and Shaughnessy in very late stages of their rehab out on the grass, but not quite to return to training. Hopefully, very soon.”

Pompey on pace to retain Championship status at Fratton Park

Blackburn Rovers were beaten 1-0 at Fratton Park on 29 March after Josh Murphy found the back of the net in the first half.

The Hampshire outfit are five points ahead of the relegation zone and arguably need to pick up another three points against Millwall to calm their nerves.

Mousinho has done an impressive job this season despite being without some of his important players.

Portsmouth are on course for Championship survival and aren’t favourites to go down to League One.

Regan Poole has been a constant in Pompey’s starting lineup when he has been available and will undoubtedly play an essential role in the coming fixtures.

The Hampshire outfit still have Derby County and Hull City to play, who are in the relegation battle, making the two fixtures even more critical fixtures than the others.

Mousinho has shown he can get the best out of the team, even with a depleted squad, making Atkinson Shaughnessy’s absence inconsequential for Pompey’s prospects.

Connor Ogilvie has emerged as a brilliant centre-back option in recent matches, giving the English manager much-needed options in the backline.
