Liam Manning shares what’s next for Atkinson after stellar Portsmouth loan spell

Rob Atkinson has been a crucial figure a Portsmouth lately, but his long-term future is uncertain.

The 26-year-old joined the South Coast Club on loan until the end of the season during the January transfer window, and he has played a key role in the team avoiding relegation this season.

Portsmouth have managed to navigate the bottom of the table, guaranteeing their safety in the second tier of English football

Atkinson made an immediate impact and has been used regularly by John Mousinho ever since, becoming an important part of the Fratton Park setup.

However, with his loan spell coming to an end in a couple of games’ time, Portsmouth are potentially set for life without the centre-back.

Manning gives insight into Atkinson’s Bristol City future

It is currently unclear whether or not Atkinson will return to Fratton Park during the summer transfer window, but given how much he has been used, it’s likely that Mousinho would welcome him back.

His two goals against Derby on April 12 were important in helping Portsmouth’s fight against survival, meaning he will forever be remembered by the Blues fans.

He also earned a Man of the Match award for his performance against Watford on Easter Monday, where Pompey secured their survival, and that has shown the quality he can offer.

However, Atkinson is under contract at his parent club Bristol City until 2027, meaning his future is very much in their hands.

Liam Manning opened up on that situation, praising Mousinho for his handling of Atkinson, and what he believes the future holds for the defender.

He told reporters: “So much is going into getting to the end of the season here first, and then naturally, the conversations will happen on situations, scenarios, and what things look like.

“I’m delighted for Rob. It was obviously one of those where he missed a large chunk of football through injury, so the fact that he’s been able to get back in and start putting minutes together, that was the reason for the loan because it was quite unlikely it was going to happen here instantly with where we were at so it’s been really good for him.

“How John’s handled him has been excellent as well so it will be one of those where we’ll get to the end of the season and see.”

Portsmouth fans want Rob Atkinson to stay

Pompey fans are keen for Atkinson to remain at Fratton Park moving forward, whether that’s another loan spell or a permanent contract.

Bringing him back to the club for next season would certainly be a significant boost to the squad, as he’s already proven and understands the team that he’s working with.

It would strengthen the side and be a popular decision with supporters, as he has become beloved by supporters due to his performances during the second half of the season.
