Portsmouth’s new Championship rivals face points deduction as charges emerge

Portsmouth could be set for a boost months ahead of the new Championship season.

After earning promotion from League One, Pompey were able to maintain their place in the second-tier with plenty of time to spare.

This has seen John Mousinho earn plenty of praise for his work, with fans hoping to keep hold of the head coach for the foreseeable.

If the Englishman is to remain in the role at Fratton Park, a boost is set to come his way as a new Championship rival looks set to face a points deduction.

Championship points deduction emerges ahead of 2025/26 season

It is fair to say that supporters on the south coast will hope for a rise up the table in the second tier next season.

After avoiding relegation, the dream of a play-off push may be on the cards in PO4, but luck will have to be behind the Blues for the season.

With that being said, Mousinho may have been handed a boost ahead of the new campaign as Leicester City could face a points deduction this season.

The Foxes will drop into the Championship for next season after facing relegation from the Premier League with a whimper under Ruud van Nistelrooy.

Things look set to get even worse at the King Power as the I Paper reported on 20 May that a points deduction could be in the pipeline after being charged with new PSR breaches.

This has seen the league organisers of the top-tier refer the East Midlands outfit to an independent commission over three separate complaints, with a hearing date to be set in the next 12 weeks.

Financial losses of over £200million between 2021 and 2024 have been reported despite only being allowed a figure in the region of £105m.

This is reduced to £81m in the EFL, with Leicester now potentially set to face a points deduction as they drop into the Championship, as is the standard punishment for PSR-related charges.

Portsmouth in Leicester City points deduction boost

There is no doubt that next season will be a completely different beast for Pompey after just one year back in the second tier.

This will come as Ipswich Town, Leicester and Southampton all drop down after dismal years in the Premier League.

With that being said, the prospect of a points deduction for the Foxes could prove to be exactly what sides in hope of a play-off finish will want to see.

If the likes of Josh Murphy remain at Fratton Park, there is every chance that a finish above the ex-Premier League champions could be possible.
