Kosznovszky clear to join Portsmouth as developments emerge from Hungary

Portsmouth appear destined to add Mark Kosznovszky to their squad sooner rather than later.

John Mousinho is short of midfield players and has identified the Hungarian as the key target to fill that gap in his squad.

It has been predicted that Kosznovszky will complete his transfer within the next couple of days, and that looks even more inevitable now that his club MTK Budapest have identified a replacement midfielder.

MTK Budapest identify replacement for Portsmouth-bound midfielder Kosznovszky

Hunor Nemeth, another star of Hungary’s under-21s, has been identified as a replacement for the Portsmouth-bound midfielder.

Much like Kosznovszky, Nemeth is a tidy passer and seen as one of the outstanding young talents in Hungarian football.

He is close to arranging a loan move to MTK Budapest from his club FC Copenhagen, according to a report from Hungarian news outlet Nemzetisport.

This loan deal would remove any lasting hesitation from MTK Budapest about losing Kosznovszky.

Kosznovszky would become Portsmouth’s third signing of the summer, after Adrian Segecic and John Swift arrived on free transfers. The midfielder is expected to complete his medical at Fratton Park this week.

Kosznovszky transfer is a gamble but Mousinho should be trusted to spend well

The signings of Adrian Segecic and John Swift were mostly seen as no-brainers among Portsmouth fans.

Segecic was the top goalscorer in the Australian A-League, while Swift will fill a big gap in Portsmouth’s midfield and has years of Championship experience.

Crucially though, both players were available on a free transfer.

That’s not the case with Kosznovszky. Portsmouth are expected to pay just over £1million to acquire the Hungarian midfielder. That’s a risky investment considering that the 23-year-old has no experience playing in a major European league (other than one game while on loan at Parma).

Still, Mousinho has a keen eye for a young player with potential. This allowed him to identify Freddie Potts as a potential game-changer for Portsmouth last season. He also arranged loan deals for Abu Kamara and Alex Robertson the season before.

This has earned him the right to take a £1m punt on Kosznovszky. Pompey fans can only hope he turns out to be the next Potts, rather than the next Abdoulaye Kamara.
