Portsmouth get ‘twin benefits’ from Yang Min-hyeok agreement with Tottenham
Yang Min-hyeok is one of several new signings for John Mousinho and Portsmouth this season.
Pompey signed Yang on loan from Tottenham, having spent last season with Championship rivals QPR.
The South Korean came on as a late substitute against Oxford United, but started in the Carabao Cup defeat against Reading at Fratton Park.
While Portsmouth fans were not impressed with Yang’s full debut, there could be multiple benefits from his acquisition, not just on the pitch.

Portsmouth can make multiple gains from Yang Min-hyeok deal
South Korean media are hoping that Yang’s loan will pave the way for future success in European football.
Despite being on loan at QPR last season, an “explosion of interest” from South Korea saw more shirts sold with his name on than any other player, via Tottenham News.
While he may have had a difficult start to life on the South Coast, football finance expert Dan Plumley can see potential benefits to the deal.
“Yes, it’s both parts, isn’t it?” he exclusively told Pompey News when asked about the commercial impact of the transfer.
“One is those kinds of clubs in the Championship, outside of those that yo-yo between the Premier League, but any club that is lower end Championship and into League One and League Two, we always have to rely on loan players from bigger clubs because that’s just the way the market is, whether we like it or not.
| Club | Appearances | Goals | Assists |
| Gangwon FC | 38 | 12 | 6 |
| QPR | 14 | 2 | 1 |
“There’s the playing aspect to it, that is, how this has just got to operate, and then if you can bring in some additional benefit over the top, then great, it’s a win-win, isn’t it?
“It’s reflective of the hierarchy of English football as well, but it does have twin benefits, and every club is also looking nowadays, especially at that level of mid to lower tier Championship.
“It’s how much you can squeeze the margins, and if you’ve got a good player coming in from a bigger club that’s not costing you as much in outlay, and you can leverage some of that commercially as well, then there’s gains to be made all the way through it as well.”

Yang Min-hyeok needs time to succeed at Fratton Park
While it would be easy to criticise Yang after his start on the South Coast, it is too early to judge him.
The winger showed signs of potential last season at Loftus Road, despite being heavily utilised as a substitute.
Of course, given how well Adrian Segecic has performed so far this campaign, perhaps supporters are comparing the two.
While the Fratton Park faithful will want to see more from the teenager, he needs time to bed into a new style and system.
- Yang will draw an audience from South Korea
- He is yet to light up English football
- Portsmouth could yield multiple benefits if the loan is a success
Although the South Korean will bring commercial benefits, his impact should be judged on his performance.
