Portsmouth timeline for Mark O’Mahony loan transfer emerges – report

Portsmouth will have to wait until the last embers of the transfer window to sign striker Mark O’Mahony, according to Chris Wise.

The BBC broadcaster shared on X [24 August] that, whilst a deal is as good as complete, the Blues will have to hold out until “just before the end” of the window to secure the Irish U21 international on loan from Brighton & Hove Albion.

Responding to a supporter on the X post, Wise then cleared up the reason for this decision by Brighton is as insurance in case any of their forward players sustain an injury prior to the deadline.

Pompey appear to have beaten off competition from Championship rivals Sheffield Wednesday to add the 19-year-old on loan [The News, 23 August].

Portsmouth waiting to complete O’Mahony deal

Portsmouth are patiently waiting in the wings, it appears, to secure what would be a season-long loan for O’Mahony, who has made three Premier League appearances for Brighton.

The Seagulls are taking an understandable stance on their centre-forward options, which include the injured Evan Ferguson alongside Danny Welbeck, Joao Pedro and new signing Georginio Rutter.

John Mousinho explained previously about how Premier League clubs are having to get their squads in order following the start to their own campaign last weekend, meaning the loan market whirs into action in the final days before the deadline – which comes on Friday night.

It’s for this reason that of Pompey’s double-figure dose of arrivals so far this summer, only winger Sam Silvera has arrived on loan – clubs must register a maximum of five loanees in their squad.

Harvey Blair, another striker, was on Friday revealed as the club’s latest signing as he penned a permanent deal from Liverpool for around £300,000, meaning the competition for strikers could get interesting – especially when Kusini Yengi returns from the sidelines and any positive developments arise further down the line on Colby Bishop.
